എത്ര മനോഹരമായ കഥ!!!

പൌലോ കൊയെലോയുടെ ആല്‍കെമിസ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തില്‍ മനോഹരമായ ഒരു കഥ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഞാന്‍ വായിച്ച എഡിഷനില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും കുറേക്കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞു വാങ്ങിയ എഡിഷനില്‍ അതില്ലായിരുന്നു. മലയാളം വിവര്‍ത്തനത്തിലും കണ്ടതായി ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നില്ല. കഥ നാര്‍സിസസിനെ പറ്റിയാണ്:

സംഘത്തിലെ ആരോ കൊണ്ട് വന്ന ഒരു പുസ്തകം ആല്‍കെമിസ്റ്റ് എടുത്തു നോക്കി. താളുകള്‍ വെറുതെ മറിച്ച്‌ നോക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ നാര്‍സിസസിനെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഒരു കഥ അയാള്‍ കണ്ടു:

നാര്‍സിസസ് ഏപ്പോഴും കാട്ടിലുള്ള ഒരു തടാകത്തിന്റെ കരയില്‍ വന്നിരുന്ന്‌ അതില്‍ വീഴുന്ന തന്റെ പ്രതിബിംബത്തിന്റെ ഭംഗിയും ആസ്വദിച്ച്‌ ഇരിയ്ക്കുക പതിവായിരുന്നു. മറ്റൊന്നിലും അവന് ഒട്ടും ശ്രദ്ധയില്ലയിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ നോക്കി നോക്കിയിരുന്നു ഒരു ദിവസം അവന്‍ ആ തടാകത്തില്‍ തന്നെ വീണു മുങ്ങി മരിച്ചു പോയി. അവന്‍ മുങ്ങിപ്പോയ സ്ഥലത്ത് നാര്‍സിസസ് എന്ന് പേരുള്ള ഒരു പുഷ്പം വിടര്‍ന്നു വന്നു. പക്ഷെ ഇങ്ങനെ ആയിരുന്നില്ല ആ പുസ്തകത്തിലെ കഥ അവസാനിച്ചിരുന്നത്‌.

നാര്‍സിസസ് മരിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ കുറച്ചു വനദേവതമാര്‍ ആ തടാകത്തിനരികിലെയ്ക്ക് വന്നു. ശുദ്ധ ജലം

നിറഞ്ഞിരുന്ന ആ തടാകം കണ്ണീരു വീണു ഉപ്പു രസമുളളതായി മാറിയിരുന്നു.

വനദേവതമാര്‍ തടാകത്തിനോട് ചോദിച്ചു, " നീ എന്തിനാണ് കരയുന്നത്?"

തടാകം പറഞ്ഞു " ഞാന്‍ നാര്‍സിസസിനു വേണ്ടിയാണ് കരയുന്നത് "

അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു, " നീ അവനു വേണ്ടി കരയുന്നത് ഒരു അത്ഭുതം അല്ല എന്ന് ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അറിയാം. കാരണം, ഞങ്ങള്‍ അവനെ വശീകരിയ്ക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി, അവന്റെ ഒരു നോട്ടത്തിനു വേണ്ടി, അവന്റെ പിന്നാലെ ഒരു പാട് നടന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്.പക്ഷെ അവന്‍ ഒരിയ്ക്കലും ഞങ്ങളെ ഒന്ന് നോക്കിയിട്ട് പോലും ഇല്ല. അവന്‍ ഏപ്പോഴും നിന്റെ അടുത്ത് തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നല്ലോ. അവന്റെ സൌന്ദര്യം ഇത്രയും കാലം അടുത്ത് നിന്ന് ആസ്വദിയ്ക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞത് നിനക്ക് മാത്രം അല്ലെ.നീ എത്ര ഭാഗ്യവതി ആണ്."

തടാകം അത്ഭുതത്തോടെ ചോദിച്ചു: "പക്ഷെ... നാര്‍സിസസ് ഒരു സുന്ദരനായിരുന്നോ"

വനദേവതമാര്‍അത്ഭുതത്തോടെ ചോദിച്ചു: "നീ എന്താണ് ഈ പറയുന്നത്? നിനക്കല്ലാതെ മറ്റാര്‍ക്കാണ് അത് പറയാന്‍ കഴിയുക? നിന്റെ അടുത്ത് വന്നിരുന്നല്ലേ അവന്‍ എല്ലാ ദിവസവും നിന്നെ തന്നെ നോക്കി നിന്റെ സൌന്ദര്യം ആസ്വദിച്ച്‌ കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്."

തടാകം കുറച്ചു നേരം നിശബ്ദമായിരുന്നു: " ഞാന്‍ അവനു വേണ്ടി കരയുന്നുണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ നാര്‍സിസസ് സുന്ദരനായിരുന്നോ എന്ന് ഞാന്‍ ഒരിയ്ക്കലും ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. പിന്നെ ഞാന്‍ കരയുന്നത് എന്താണെന്ന് വെച്ചാല്‍, ഓരോ തവണയും അവന്‍ എന്റെ അടുത്ത് വന്നിരുന്ന്‌ എന്നെ നോക്കിയിരുന്നപ്പോള്‍ മുഴുവന്‍, അവന്റെ കണ്ണുകളുടെ ആഴങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രതിഫലിച്ചിരുന്ന എന്റെ സൌന്ദര്യം ആയിരുന്നു ഞാന്‍ ആസ്വദിച്ചിരുന്നത്."

The first president of the United States of America borrowed two books from the New York Society Library in 1789 but failed to return them.

Adjusted for inflation, he has since racked up $300,000 USD [£195,000 GBP] in fines for being some 220 years late.

The New York Society Library says it will not pursue the fine. It would simply like the books back

On 5 October 1789, the first president borrowed two books from what was then the only library in Manhattan - "Law of Nations," a dissertation on international relations, and a volume of debate transcripts from Britain's House of Commons.

George Washington did not even bother to sign his name in the borrower's ledger. An aide simply scrawled "president" next to the title to show who had taken them out.

The two tomes were due back a month later but were never returned and have been accruing late fees ever since. Librarians uncovered the misdemeanour as they were digitising the library's ledger from that time

This is the scene in most research centers and software companies and other

Bachelors 'Passing-Time' during late hours in the office just bcoz they say
they've nothing else to do...
Now what r the consequences. ..

'Working' (for the record only) late hours soon becomes part of the
institute or company culture.

With bosses more than eager to provide support to those 'working' late in
the form of taxi vouchers, food vouchers and of course good feedback, (oh,
he's a hard worker... goes home only to change..!!).
They aren't helping things too...

To hell with bosses who don't understand the difference between 'sitting'
late and 'working' late!!!

Very soon, the boss start expecting all employees to put in extra working
hours.

So, My dear Bachelors let me tell you, life changes when u get married and
start having a family.... office is no longer a priority, family is... and
That's when the problem starts... b'coz u start having commitments at home
too.

For your boss, the earlier 'hardworking' guy suddenly seems to become a
'early leaver' even if u leave an hour after regular time... after doing the
same amount of work.

People leaving on time after doing their tasks for the day are labeled as
work-shirkers. ..

Girls who thankfully always (its changing nowadays... though) leave on time
are labeled as 'not up to it'. All the while, the bachelors pat their own
backs and carry on 'working' not realizing that they r spoiling the work
culture at their own place and never realize that they would have to regret
at one point of time. *

So what's the moral of the story??*
* Very clear, LEAVE ON TIME!!!
* Never put in extra time ' unless really needed '
* Don't stay back unnecessarily and spoil your company work culture which
will in turn cause inconvenience to you and your colleagues.

There are hundred other things to do in the evening..

Learn music...

Learn a foreign language...

Try a sport... TT, cricket..... ....

Importantly, get a girl friend or boy friend, take him/her around town...

* And for heaven's sake, net cafe rates have dropped to an all-time low
(plus, no fire-walls) and try cooking for a change.

Take a tip from the Smirnoff ad: 'Life's calling, where are you??'
